FAQ

This the FAQ section for me, I get asked a lot of the same questions so this is a good place to put them! Ok, let’s start with the big one:
.
How is the program Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy, and what exactly is it about? What do you learn in it?This question is asked a lot, and I don’t blame you guys! Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy leads you to a CA designation and a science degree. You learn both science and accounting courses in the program. Biotechnology and Accounting really don’t have a clear link in practice most of the time, however science builds your analytical skills, it trains you to break down and digest large quantities of data and make sense of it all. It also prepares you for reports and the heavy course load teaches you how to work under stress and time manage. The program does exactly what Waterloo says it does, it puts you towards the CA path with a strong science background. If you go through with it, you live on your CA and has science to boot.
So will science directly help your career in accounting? Not at the moment, but I believe that the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are an emerging trend due to the aging demographics, so it is a good background to have . Can you use this program to get into professional science school like med school? Yes, but you need to take calculus and physics to meet the requirements in addition to everything else.
How is it? So far it’s been very interesting, I’ve always loved knowledge and learning course so different from each other not only gives you a break from an individual area at times, but it makes the world seems so amazing. Plus you get to come up with some jokes that no one else will understand =P. It IS hard, the labs are a killer and you have to time manage REALLY well to balance the heavy work load and other activities. At times you feel like it’s not fair because others have such a light course load while you have so much to worry about. However, at the end it feels very rewarding. You will also meet the most amazing people ever!
You have to be the right kind of person to appreciate this program. If you come in with the thought that you’ll have an advantage in accounting, you’ll be disappointed. However, I feel like I have an advantage in life. Science is the fundamentals of understanding and logic, and I know that many things I learn in biotechnology will help me in the future. class 2A is supposed to be a very hard term, but I’m not scared at all, because I’m been through so much that I know that I have the time management and self control to take it on!
To tell you the truth, there were times where I wasn’t sure if I liked the program. But now that I look back, I had a great time and grown so much! Biotech/CA is definitely not an easy way to anything, but it will give you a lot for those of you that is willing to reach your hand out and take it! If you have any questions regarding my experience in this program, please contact me!

You’re in Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy, and now you’re specializing in IT. So you’re studying accounting, science, and IT? How do you make any sense of that?Yeah I saw this one coming. While Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy is a very unique program, I have found the perfect way for it to work for me. I have a very broad range of interest, and I love learning and knowing about all sorts of things. Science is not something I am willing to give up and I find biotechnology very interesting, and it gives me skills and a method of thinking I can apply to everything in life. However, I love the accounting work environment and the types of work a Chartered Accountant will do. Being able to work in a team environment to get things done is something that always makes me happy and gives me that extra drive. It’s rare to find that kind of energy and work environment in science. I worked with a computer all my life, and is very interested in computers and IT, I find it a very useful skill that can be very useful in a career like mine, there is even a designation called CA.IT, which I am trying to obtain.
I believe that practically IT has a lot of potential. 99.999% of businesses require information technology to operate, and it is almost a required skill, up to a certain level, for every professional. I really want to develop on my IT abilities and make the most out of it! I believe that IT will become increasingly important as new regulations comes out, as new systems will be required to support them.
On the other hand biotechnology is also an emerging industry, and while there’s no official specialization for biotechnology, I think it’s also a very valuable skill for me to have. It both helps my critical thinking skills, and give me the knowledge that I need to be ready and equipped when biotechnology opportunities emerge.
So in the end, I want to major in accounting, specialize in IT, and have a strong science background. This is pretty much the ideal person I want to be! Even though I might have to work a bit harder to get it, it will make me a very well adjusted and balanced person, that is both versatile and brings a different way of thinking to the people I work with!

Why did you make this blog site? What is the purpose? When I made this site, it was mainly as a home base, where I can share my thoughts and put information about myself if anyone’s interested. However, I soon realized that I can really help others by sharing a lot of useful information with everyone! I want to make JennyCao.ca a place where people can come for help, advice, and a constant inflow of useful and relevant information for people similar to me. Meaning other accounting students that is interested in personal development, and is looking for co-op opportunities.
.
What kind of topics will you post on this blog?I will post topics on things that are relevant to people like me, for now this means accounting students in Waterloo that are facing their co-op terms. However, I also want to provide guidance for others, perhaps first years or even high school students by sharing my experience.
My topics will mainly center around accounting, technology, science/health, organizational/study habits, networking/meeting people, student life, and occasionally some of my thoughts and logic.
I am also trying to provide as much useful content for my visitor as possible, so I really hope that you will request it if you need something.
